The Importance of Eco Activism In Armenia

Armenia has been facing devastating environmental issues for years. Climate change has caused extreme weather changes, increasing the vulnerability of Armenia’s environment, making it highly susceptible to environmental issues¹. As the climate in the region continues to fluctuate, Armenian citizens are becoming increasingly exposed to certain diseases², which may prove to be life-threatening. Despite the growing urgency of these problems, environmental issues often remain overlooked by the broader public. That is why raising awareness and encouraging action is more important than ever.

Eco activism – defined as the desire to promote a sustainable lifestyle to protect the environment³; it is a way to bring importance to environmental issues affecting health and stability around the globe. While older generations may remain less engaged, Armenian youth are stepping up. By harnessing the power of social media platforms, young eco-activists are organizing rallies, sharing petitions, and spreading critical information to large audiences. This digital advocacy has the potential to capture the attention of both the public and government officials, encouraging policy changes that address environmental degradation.

Grassroots organizations have played a key role in supporting this momentum. One such organization is Maqoor, a youth-led NGO that empowers students to take environmental action. Through student-run eco-activism clubs, Maqoor educates young Armenians about environmental governance and equips them with the tools to mobilize their communities⁴. These clubs not only raise awareness but also foster a sense of unity and purpose among participants. As the movement grows, Armenian youth are emerging as powerful advocates for change, both locally and globally. The rising interest in eco-activism reflects a deeper connection many Armenians feel with their natural environment. Increased participation in eco activism is necessary in order to save the lush, green forests and beautiful blue waters of Armenia, which have played such an important role in shaping the culture of Armenians.

To slow the pace of environmental decline, eco-activism must continue to grow. With more Armenians joining the movement, there is hope for a future where the country’s natural beauty is preserved, and environmental issues are addressed with the seriousness they deserve.
